Hagstrom Ultra Max Special
A "long scale" dream provided with a strong top made of flamed maple with noble metallic finish.
The Ultra Max shares the same compact body concept as the Ultra Swede, although the mahogany body is slightly larger and features a strong top made of carved maple. A mahogany neck is glued into this body using a long mortise and tenon joint system. Its scale length is 25.50, the H-Expander™ truss rod is also present, and the fretboard is made of our trusty Resinator™. The slim and ultra-comfortable “fast neck” is only completed in this special version by the Lundgren Design Humbucker Duo, which has been road-proven for more than a tour and is numbered No. 02 at the neck and No. 05 at the bridge. This combination, first introduced in the now also rightfully sought after Fantomen, provides an unparalleled sound experience and delivers everything from sparkling clean sounds in split mode to the fattest riff attacks and “cut through the mix” lead overdrive tones.
Each pickup has a separate volume control with an R/C circuit, making it easy to adjust clean sound variations. The master tone control contains a push/pull switch for quick selection of fat humbucker and pristine clean single-coil sounds. The Ultra Max not only offers the power, long sustain, and lightning-fast response of the Ultra Swede, but also a fresh vocabulary of sounds with more flexibility and, thanks to the compact body, a comfortable playing culture. With its longer 25.50 scale length, the Ultra Max is also suitable for drop tunings. Guitarists looking for a slim body and a sizzling sound will certainly get their moneys worth here.
The Ultra Max Special Metallic is available in two stunning pearl-effect finishes: Mystique Metallic and Vinterny Metallic. Given the features mentioned above, its hard to believe the surprising price level of these guitars. All Hagstrom electric guitars and basses include our patented H-Expander™ truss rod. Providing tension at both ends and running the entire length of the neck, the rigid yet light-weight alloy truss rod allows for a very low action and thin neck, two factors that were instrumental in earning Hagstrom its reputation as the world’s fastest playing guitar. The H-Expander™ truss rod not only provides ultimate neck stability, but it also contributes to Hagstrom’s unique tone. Longer sustain and a round attack are some of the sonic characteristics the H-Expander™ adds to the tonal essence of Hagstrom.
Hagstrom models use 18:1 or 15:1 gear ratio machine heads based on our own designs to insure accurate tuning. Viking® and HB series basses feature machine heads with a 17:1 gear ratio.
Resinator™ wood is a wood composite material that is both more uniform in density and more stable than any standard wood product. These characteristics eliminate dead spots or “wolf tones” sometimes associated with conventional wood fingerboards. Resinator™ wood has an articulate sound similar to high quality ebony, but without any of the problems associated with ebony. It provides a stable and clear tone, and also adds higher overtones and harmonics which uniquely detail each note. Like our H-Expander™ truss rod, Resinator™ wood is a major contributor to the distinctive “Hagstrom tone”.
Hagstrom’s unique Sustain Block Tailpiece™ was the result of design work starting in 1976 and made its first appearance on Swede and Super Swede guitars produced in 1978. Since then it has been a signature feature on many of our solid body models. Each string terminates in a single, massive brass block coupled directly to the guitar’s body. The blocks are detached from one another to reduce interference between the strings, maximizing each string’s unique contribution.
